What is the Future File® system?

The Future File® system is the most comprehensive, easy to use system to help you organize your wishes and key information and provide your loved ones a roadmap on what to do should you become incapacitated or pass away. It is available in a hard copy workbook set or in a Windows-based desktop software version that resides on your computer.

Who should purchase a Future File?

We suggest that everyone over the age of 18 has a Future File filled out for them, but especially if you or your loved ones are over age 30 and/or have children, you must have a Future File system to help those you may leave behind or who will care for you and your affairs in the case of medical issues or end-of-life scenarios.

You may choose to purchase Future File systems for yourself (to give your loved ones peace of mind and assistance) or for your loved ones (so you know what to do if something happens to them).

Yes! Due to the individual nature of specific information, including medical records and individual accounts, we recommend that each individual have their own personal Future File system filled out on their behalf. We often offer discounts for multiple purchases made at the same time.

Who created the Future File system?

Future File was created by billion-dollar dealmaker, entrepreneur, bestselling author and multi-media personality Carol Roth. Carol based the product off of a prototype that her own father created for her and her sister before his incapacitation and eventual passing. USING FUTURE FILE
How do I get started with the Future File system?

If you have purchased the hard copy of the Future File system, simply read the Instructions Letter than comes with the system. Then, open your book marked “Instructions Manual” and follow the prompts. When prompted, you can fill out the information requested in your “Guidebook” and file requested documents in your filing folder.

If you have purchased the Future File system software, use the email we sent you to download the software to your Windows-based computer. There is a code in the email required to unlock the software and register it to the user. Follow the software prompts from there, including reviewing the built in tutorial that will open after installation and registration.

How often should I update the Future File?

You should update your Future File whenever any relevant information changes (you updated a password, got a new account, changed jobs, bought an insurance policy, etc.).

Also, we recommend updating the file two-times-per-year with recent statements and information. You can do this on the spring ahead/fall back daylight savings time days, your birthday and half-birthday or two other dates throughout the year to make sure that the file is up-to-date for your loved ones. It defeats the purpose of the Future File if your loved ones have out of date information.

How do I update the Future File?

You can update your information in a variety of ways.

For the hard copy Guidebook, you can cross out and re-write items, you can staple additional pages to the original page or you can go HERE to purchase a booster pack of replacement pages and include them in your Future File Guidebook.

Additionally, for the Future File software system, you can enter in the updated information on the appropriate page or pages, print those new pages separately and replace them in your print out of the Guidebook (or save a new PDF version if preferred).

Can I leave a copy of the information on my computer or in the cloud?

Your Future File filing system with the Future File Guidebook for your loved ones will contain very sensitive information about you and access to most of your confidential financial and other important life documents.

Therefore, you want to make sure to keep all of the information within (or any information that it leads to, such as access to a safe or safe deposit box) controlled and secure. There are extra risks associated with storing your information on a computer or in the Cloud, so while we advise against this, if you do decide keep information stored in this manner, take extra precaution to keep your information secure.

How can I access my information remotely?

For safety and security reasons, we do not store any of your sensitive information on our servers. If you are having trouble and require assistance, go HERE.

Software- What system requirements do I need?

Future File software is compatible with the following Windows-based systems: Microsoft Windows 7 or higher. You also need an internet connection solely to register software.

Software- How do I use the software?

If you have purchased the Future File system software, use the email we sent you to download the software to your Windows-based computer. There is a code in the email required to unlock the software and register it to the user.

Follow the software prompts from there, including reviewing the built in tutorial that will open after installation and registration. You can also access the tutorial at any time from the Help menu for a refresher.

Generally speaking, the top window pane of the software has instructions and the bottom window pane is where you enter your information.

You press the buttons on the bottom to move forward and mark items as complete when you are done with them.

When you have finished entering the information, you print out the information through the “PRINT” menu. This becomes your Guidebook to leave behind for your loved ones, with information you have gathered via the instruction prompts along the way. You can print a physical copy or make a PDF copy if you prefer (please see the security issues with PDFs above).

Software- How do I register my Future File Software?

Once you purchase your Future File system software, you will be sent an email with an activation/license code. This will allow you to download and install Future File on your preferred device.

Once you have downloaded the software, you will be guided through the registration process via a series of screens within the Future File software program. Please note that you will need that activation/license code that you were emailed and will need to be connected to the internet in order to submit your registration. This does not expose any of the data in your software to the internet; you will only be sending out this registration information.

SECURITY
Is my information secure?

Generally speaking, yes. If you are using the hard copy version of the Future File, your information will remain offline, free from security issues that arise from using the internet, such as potential hackers.

If you are using the software version of the Future File, this software is downloadable to your device of choice, so that you are not exposing your information online. All information will reside securely on your own device.

That being said, for whichever version you are using, it is imperative that you keep the location of your completed Future File system secure at all times. It will contain all of your personal and financial information, so you don’t want a sloppy family member to lose the information or have it fall into the hands of someone who can use it to drain your bank account and steal your identity.


If you choose to store elements online, you must keep those secure as well.


For the software version, you should keep your password and answers to your security questions safe. You do have the opportunity to clear all data from the software version, once you have completed the system and printed a copy.

How do I install my Future File software

Once you purchase your Future File system software, you will be sent an email with an activation/license code. This will allow you to download and install Future File on your preferred device.

I am moving to a new computer. How can I move my software?

When developing the Future File software, the company had to make a decision between security and portability. Through extensive research and beta testing, they found that people preferred security due to the sensitive nature of the information involved and thus, preferred to have the software data stored securely on a computer, rather than in the cloud where it could be hacked.

So, the underlying database in the actual software likely can’t be transferred to a different computer if something happens to the one it’s residing on. But, as you fill in the software, you have ability to print out or save the information to a PDF as you go through it. If you like, you can encrypt or password protect that file for enhanced security and choose to put it on your own cloud account (Dropbox, One Drive, etc.) to access it if something happens to your computer.

And, if you had printed your full Future File document out already, you’d still have a backup hard copy of your information, so you would just need to retype that page/information in the software program and reprint just that page if you needed to update or change anything.

Printing- Can I print just one page?

Yes. In the software, you can print one Guidebook page, if for example, you need to update one particular page.

To do this, go to the software page that you would like to print and simply click on “Print Current Page”. When the preview pops up, click on the print icon at the top left and select your desired printer settings.

To print an Instructions page for reference, go to the Instructions page within the software that you would like to print and click on “Print Current Page Instructions”. When the preview pops up, click on the print icon at the top left and select your desired printer settings.

Printing- How do I print the Future File Guidebook for my loved ones?

Once you have finished entering in your information into the software program, you will print out a Guidebook to leave behind for loved ones in case of an emergency or passing.

To do this, simply click on “Print Full Document” within the software’s “Print” section and from there, you will see a preview of the document. Click on the print icon towards the top right of the screen and use your printer settings as desired to print, as you would any document. Please note that this may take a few minutes to tee up.

Remember to file this document for your loved ones in the filing folder that you are using to store your other Future File system information or in another secure location, making sure to let your loved ones know how to access that location.

Your Future File Guidebook document can also be saved into a pdf format, if you’d prefer to have an electronic copy of your completed Future File saved to your computer, rather than or in addition to a hard copy print-out.

To do this, simply click on “Save as PDF File” from the “Print” section of your software and save a copy to the location on your computer or online where you would like for it to be stored.

Please remember that if you choose to store a copy on your computer or online in a “cloud” storage system, your document may not be secure, so take extra steps to protect it as it contains personal, sensitive information.

Passwords- I forgot my password. What should I do?

The Future File software is password protected to provide extra security for your sensitive personal information.

If you have forgotten your password, click on the “Reset Password” button within your software and type the answers to your security questions exactly as you had written them when you set up your Future File. It will not allow you to reset your password if these are incorrect. Then, click on the “Continue” button to reset your password.

If you cannot remember the answers to your security questions or your password, you will be locked out of your Future File software with no option for reset, so please keep your password and answers to the security questions somewhere secure, but where you can find them.

What filing folders do you recommend?

We recommend that you use an accordion or similar style folder with at least four sections, so that you can properly file your documents and Guidebook for your loved ones.
